Rumor has been swirling since this morning that a new Assassin’s Creed game is going to be set in the Aztec empire but despite the source having a somewhat reliable background, it looks like the rumor is false. Games reviewer Jeremy Penter a.k.a. ACG published a tweet that simply claimed that the next Assassin’s Creed game “will be Aztecs.” No context or further information was provided but considering Penter apparently has a decent track record when it comes to Ubisoft games, people starting thinking he might be right. Not quite, according to the undisputed king of insider information, Jason Schreier.
New Assassin’s Creed game will reportedly feature Valhalla’s Basim
Next AC game will be Aztecs.

In response to Penter’s tweet above, Schreier pointed ResetEra users to his Bloomberg report in which he claimed that the next Assassin’s Creed game, codenamed Rift, will be a small standalone title feature Assassin’s Creed Valhalla character Basim Ibn Ishaq. Apparently, Rift started off as a Valhalla expansion but became a standalone project as a stopgap title due to Ubisoft’s thin release schedule.
“Would be some wacky time travel shenanigans if Basim went to the Aztec Empire,” Schreier wrote. “I’ve also heard about the two main games in development as part of AC Infinity, and neither of them are Aztec. Maybe there’s some super secret spinoff in production somewhere, but I haven’t heard of it!” For the uninitiated Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which Ubisoft has officially confirmed without providing any details, is rumored to be a live service experience with an online platform that evolves over time.
Assassin’s Creed is prone to leaks but we’ll take this Aztec thing with a huge grain of salt, then.
In other news, EA has responded to recent Skate 4 leaks and has urged fans not to download unauthorized material, and Square Enix has explained why Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is PS5 exclusive.
