Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost is an annual in-game Halloween-themed event which lets players don masks, take part in unique event activities, and earn candy to unlock spooky cosmetics. For the past few years, the main activity for Festival of the Lost has been the Haunted Forest, a spooky dark variation on the Vex-based Infinite Forest from the Year 1 Curse of Osiris expansion. Players have been running the Haunted Forest every year since 2018, but Festival of the Lost 2021 now has players exploring Haunted Lost Sectors instead, a pretty dramatic shift that should make it worth returning for the event.
The headline piece of Festival of the Lost 2021 is the Dinosaur-themed armor ornaments, voted by the community earlier this year. In a showdown between classic movie monsters and dinosaurs, teeth, claws, and horns won the day. Titans get a ferocious-looking T-Rex set. Warlocks rock the three-horned triceratops. And Hunters become the clever velociraptor. These ornaments can be purchased for Silver or Bright Dust in the Eververse shop.
The dino theme continues with the Jurassic Green pulse rifle, which longtime players may recognize as the old Lincoln Green pulse rifle, now reprised and covered in dinosaur scales. The Jurassic Green pulse rifle can be unlocked by earning candy to get the new gun from Eva Levante. Players will earn candy by playing the new Haunted Sectors activity, which you can launch from the Tower map menu.
The Haunted Sectors take Guardians through “three new tales of terror:”
- An Exo and a Vex Mind have merged to become something… new
- A Guardian on Nessus is being hunted for their Ghost
- Headless creatures prowl through the dark chasms of the Moon
A brand new Lore book called Book of the Forgotten seems to contain some Guardian horror stories, “filled with memorable characters and heroic deeds.” Pages can be earned by participating in the Festival of the Lost event, specifically running through Haunted Sectors.
Players will be able to get their hands on a number of other unique cosmetics too—such as the new spider-Sparrow, ghostly green Ghost shell, and Savathun moth-themed ship—either via the Eververse store or by playing the event. There’s also a unique emblem available from Bungie Rewards by participating in Festival of the Lost.
With Season of the Lost being the longest Destiny Season yet (essentially double previous three-month Seasons) due to the delay of The Witch Queen, refreshing these Seasonal events is a big part of keeping players interested during the extended wait for the next major expansion.
Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost begins today and runs for three weeks, ending on November 2. The Bungie 30th Anniversary event will begin just a month later, on December 5th, as well as The Dawning holiday event sometime that month. The Witch Queen and its corresponding Season then begin on February 22, 2022, which will add a bunch of new content at the same time that the Forsaken campaign and Tangled Shore destination head to the Destiny Content Vault. Some players are speculating that another major character could die in The Witch Queen, which may be just one more person we’ll need to mourn come next year’s Festival of the Lost event.
