After two months at the top, the Nintendo Switch was outsold by the PlayStation 4 in May 2017 in the United States, the NPD has revealed. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella adds that “Switch continues to be the primary catalyst for hardware spending gains,” and the combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One are 29% higher than the PS3 and Xbox 360 after 43 months.
As for total industry sales in May 2017, they were down 11% year-on-year to $542 million. This includes an increase of 7% in hardware to $147 million, a drop of 20% in console software to $271 million, a drop of 48% in PC software to $12 million, and an increase of 1% in accessories to $112 million.
Discussing software sales in May 2017, Piscatella said, “The new release slate of May 2016, led by Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Overwatch, and Doom proved a challenging comparable.” He then added, “Year to date, video game software dollar sales are flat versus 2016, at $1.9 billion.”
