Uncharted 4 Update 1.31

Cliff Bleszinski Says Current AAA Model is “Unsustainable” Unless “You’re an Activision, 2K or a Sony”

Boss Key founder and Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has said that the current AAA model is “nearly unsustainable” and in a “really, really weird spot” because the games that people want are costing millions to develop.

Speaking at the Reboot Develop conference, he likened AAA development to the American restaurant business, implying that we get the same thing everywhere. Bleszinski believes that AAA has been reduced to a “category of eight games that are getting repeated over and over again” and used Call of Duty and Uncharted 4 as examples of “great” games that cost millions to bring to the market.

He also said that $60 is “a lot of money to ask people for” and as a result, gamers see new IPs as a risky purchase and would rather spend money on franchises that they’re already familiar with. “This is a nearly unsustainable model, unless you’re an Activision, 2K or a Sony,” he remarked.
