With Geralt’s story coming to an end in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt RED is planning to give the series some rest and move on to other projects, according CEO Marcin Iwinski. In the September issue of Game Informer magazine, Iwinski said that the studio has not even thought about what comes next in The Witcher universe and instead, it’s focusing on the upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077.
It [The Witcher franchise] deserves some rest. The past 10 years the team has been working on swords and castles and medieval Slavic monsters. So I think it’s time for some guns, androids, and some ammo. And a necropolis. So this is what we’ll be working on.
Geralt might not return to The Witcher, but it doesn’t mean CD Projekt RED is short of stories to tell.
We definitely are not annualizing a franchise or anything–it’s about the experience. The world of The Witcher is gigantic and it’s great to tell these stories, but I don’t know when this will happen.
We were previously told that Cyberpumk 2077 is unlikely to come out until 2017 but that the studio is hard at work on the game. With it now being the studio’s focus, we hope to hear more information soon.
