DICE: Single-Player Was “Never in the Plan” for Star Wars Battlefront

DICE’s General Manager Patrick Bach has said that a single-player mode was “never in the plan” for Star Wars Battlefront, and that the developers always wanted players to “re-live the battles.” Speaking to GameSpot during E3 2015, Bach said:

To be honest, single-player was never in the plan. It was never the concept. The concept for us was always that we wanted players to re-live the battles. We wanted them to play the battles from the original movies. And DICE, coming from its Battlefield background, knows how to make awesome battles in that context.

We were also thinking about the Battlefront franchise, which has multiplayer at its core.

DICE previously said that Battlefront will have offline single-player via a feature called Missions, which will allow players to play solo or cooperatively with bots on or offline. Bach reiterated during the interview that players can still enjoy the game if they don’t want to play with others.

I get it though, you also want a parallel Star Wars narrative experience. That is not what we’re building. But we are building these small missions too. If you like our world and mechanics, but you don’t want to play with strangers on the internet, then you can still enjoy this game.

Elsewhere in the interview, Bach said that the development team has been under immense pressure to do right by the franchise, and that he’s never heard the phrase “don’t f*** this up” so much in his life before.

It’s a different pressure, and of course it’s stupid for us to put ourselves under more pressure. There’s a very… avid Star Wars following, who all want Battlefront to be great. I’ve never heard the expression “do not f*** this up” as many times as I have with this. So that’s where it starts. We get it, “don’t f*** this up.”

Publisher EA seems confident that Battlefront is on track for its November 17 release this year. COO Peter Moore said that the company wouldn’t mind delaying the game if necessary, but it wouldn’t come to that.

Star Wars Battlefront will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
