Sony’s boss Shuhei Yoshida said last year that the PlayStation 4’s sales were surpassing the company’s expectations and that Sony didn’t completely understand why the console was selling so well. Looks like the team feels similarly about Bloodborne. Sony’s Fergal Gara revealed during an extensive interview with MCV UK that Bloodborne‘s sales took the company by surprise.
It did surprise us. We had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.
I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.
Having sold more than 2 million PS4s in the UK, Gara says 2015 is a “key year” in which Sony can reach out to a younger audience. “We have some first-party software that can certainly reach into the younger age groups, such as Tearaway for PS4. Plus, there are games that go across the age spectrum, like FIFA,” he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gara talked about the PS4’s upcoming lineup and commented on the lack of games for this generation. You can read more on that here.
