PlayStation Portal sales update

PlayStation Portal Sales Continue to Exceed Sony’s Expectations

PlayStation’s VP of product management Hiromi Wakai has revealed that PlayStation Portal sales continue to exceed Sony’s expectations. While the company doesn’t have any numbers to share, Wakai revealed in an interview that the handheld remote player has proven to be surprisingly popular among PS5 owners.

PlayStation Portal sales prompt Sony to increase production

Speaking to Stephen Totilo’s Gamefile, Wakai reiterated that PlayStation Portal is a niche product that’s meant for people with very specific needs. In response to criticisms that the Portal is strictly a remote player, Sony previously said that the handheld wasn’t designed to make a profit to begin with.

“From the beginning, PlayStation Portal was intended to be a product best suited for people with specific needs and those who want to play in a specific way, so the reactions after the announcement were very much within our expectations,” Wakai said, adding that such is the Portal’s popularity that Sony is “shipping more units consistently.” “We will continue to bring more units to the market,” Wakai promised.

Elsewhere, Wakai revealed that the Portal’s production didn’t fully kickstart until 2022. Asked whether Sony will allow Portal users to stream games directly in the future, Wakai said that she doesn’t have anything to share regarding that.
