Yuri Lowenthal, who voiced Smoke in Mortal Kombat 1, has revealed a funny story about his first session playing the character.
What did Yuri Lowenthal say about playing Smoke in Mortal Kombat 1?
In an interview with PlayStation LifeStyle, Lowenthal revealed that prior to his work on Mortal Kombat 1, he didn’t know much about the series. As such, he ended up accidentally asking the game’s voice director about “this new character, Smoke.”
“It was very new to me in that I was not hugely into Mortal Kombat before,” the actor explained. “I mean, everybody knows Mortal Kombat. I had played Mortal Kombat, but for years, I had just not been paying attention. So I embarrassed myself when I got into the first session with Dominic Cianciolo, who wrote it and who also directed the voice sessions with me. I was like, ‘So, tell me all about this new character, Smoke.’ And he’s like, ‘Smoke’s not new. [Laughs]. We haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s not a new character. Let me give you some history.'”
Despite the title, it Mortal Kombat 1 is the twelfth mainline entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise and the second reboot after Mortal Kombat (2011). The title takes place in the new timeline made by Liu Kang following the events of Mortal Kombat 11’s story mode.
