The Last of Us HBO TV series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey seem to be split over Joel’s fate in the upcoming season. In a new interview with Esquire, showrunner Craig Mazin further teased viewers, and hinted that he isn’t constrained by the source material.

Will HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 follow the game?
Joel faces a shockingly brutal and untimely death in The Last of Us Part 2. Series co-creator Neil Druckmann has already teased Abby’s appearance in the TV show’s second season, indicating that unsuspecting viewers will indeed go through the same emotions that players did back in 2020.
“This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters,” Mazin told Esquire. “But the important thing to note is that neither Neil nor I feel constrained by the source material.”
Ramsey isn’t ready for that, however. “If that does take place in the show, I don’t know that I’m emotionally ready for it,” she said, revealing that she has no idea what Mazin has in store.
As for Pascal, he says he hasn’t played the games but he doesn’t see why the show should stray from the source material. In other words, Pascal isn’t opposed to his character’s death in Season 2.
