PSVR 2 Review Roundup

PSVR 2 Review Round-up: Is PS5’s VR Headset Worth Buying?

PSVR 2 is due for release in just six days. Unfortunately, Sony declined to provide PSLS with a review unit, so you’ll have to see what everyone else has to say about it. Here’s a review roundup that may help you to make up your mind about whether the PS5 VR headset is worth buying. Stay tuned for our review in the coming weeks.

PSVR 2 review: The good and the bad

All outlets agree the PSVR 2 is a huge leap in technology. Many agreed on key improvements like “a phenomenally good HDR OLED screen,” although others have raised concerns about the cable that tethers players to the PS5 console and still has a tendency to get in the way. Of course, the price of entry has come up many times, but while several places feel the price tag is worth it, others believe it may stop players from adopting the headset at the start.

The PSVR 2 launch lineup has been described as “solidly varied, though not quite spectacular”. Horizon: Call of the Mountain in particular is getting fairly solid reviews with an average Metacritic score of 79 at the time of writing. However, there are doubts as to whether this support will continue for the headset’s lifespan, especially as there is a lack of first-party titles launching with PSVR 2 on February 22.

Here are some examples:

  • VGC (4/5) – PSVR 2 is a stunning piece of technology. The price tag is significant and will be a barrier to many, but the quality that’s delivered is outstanding. The launch lineup, however, doesn’t fill us with confidence that the hardware will be supported for the length of the PlayStation 5 generation, at least from PlayStation’s own studios.
  • Eurogamer and Digital Foundry – This is a vastly superior VR- experience that brings all the advances seen in other areas of the market to PS5, along with some key improvements including a phenomenally good HDR OLED screen.
  • PushSquare – PSVR2 improves on all of the flaws of its predecessor, while still retaining the positives, like how comfortable it is to wear. […] Despite its eye-watering price tag, this truly next-gen effort is not overpriced.
  • Gamespot – PSVR2 is a very well-made VR headset that has a high-quality build and premium feel while utilizing powerful technology and features to ensure it hits all the markers for what a modern VR headset should offer
  • IGN (9/10) – With top-notch visual quality and immersively tactile Sense controllers, PlayStation VR2 represents a quantum leap over its predecessor, setting a new standard for console VR gaming.
  • PlayStation Universe (9.5/10) – A beguiling marriage of raw power, innovative design and a solidly varied, though not quite spectacular launch line-up, PSVR2 manages to set a ridiculously high bar for others to follow and is easily the most compelling piece of tech I’ve got in my living room right now.
