Next Battlefield Game in Development, New Studio Making the Campaign

A new Battlefield game is on the way, and a new studio will develop part of it. EA revealed that Ridgeline Games, led by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, will be working on the campaign for the next entry in the Battlefield franchise. Unfortunately, this might not be good news for some fans of the series.

Next Battlefield campaign in development at newly revealed Ridgeline Games studio

After Battlefield 2042 flopped, Respawn head Vince Zampella was out in charge of the franchise. With this change came the news that EA wants to make a “connected Battlefield universe” with characters and events shared over multiple games. The first phase of this seems to be the campaign that is currently in development at Ridgeline Games.

So, it seems like EA wants to take the series in a direction that lines up with what Call of Duty does. Unfortunately, that’s not likely to garner much love from long-time fans. Battlefield has always been more era-based, with each game occurring during a certain conflict and time period. Battlefield 1, for example, was built around World War 1, and every aspect of the game took that into account and centered around that idea.

The announcement also didn’t address the specialist system, which is another big concern of fans. One of the central criticisms of Battlefield 2042 is that you’re forced to play as a hero character instead of a random soldier. So, everyone is 1 of 12 characters, even in matches with up to 128 players.

Lehto had this to say in the Ridgeline Games announcement:

It is a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the charge on expanding the narrative, storytelling, and character development opportunities in the Battlefield series.

In other news, Overwatch 2 heroes will need to be unlocked through the battle pass, and CDPR swears The Witcher 3 PS5 upgrade is still coming out this year.
