Revised, Lighter PS5 Models Are Reportedly Being Rolled Out

It’s not quite PS5 slim, but reports have emerged that Sony has begun rolling out revised PS5 models that are a couple of hundred grams lighter than the existing series. According to folks over at Press Start AU, series CFI-1202B (digital PS5) and CFI-1202A (disc PS5) have become available at retailers in Australia, which was also the first country to receive the previous console revision. Since companies revise hardware models a number of times over a console’s lifecycle, they don’t advertise what has changed unless it’s a significant change (like an actual PS5 slim). Therefore, it’s too soon to say what this new series brings. However, customers have reported that the new units are lighter.

Does Sony have plans for PS5 slim?

There have been a number of reports that Sony plans to launch PS5 slim but nothing concrete has surfaced yet. We did see slimmer PS3 and PS4 models but nothing so far to suggest that PS5 slim will actually happen. Nevertheless, this new digital series is apparently 200 grams lighter and disc series is 300 grams lighter, translating to a difference of 500 grams and 600 grams from the launch models, respectively. As Press Start has pointed out, the disc PS5 now weighs what the digital console weighed at launch in November 2020.

Separately, Twitter user Renka_Schedule found out that the aforementioned series will launch in Japan on September 15th. It’s unclear when this series is set to arrive in the rest of the world.

We’ll find out more about the changes as the consoles make their way to tech-savvy customers so we’ll make sure to update our readers.

In other news, Sony’s mobile push has intensified with the acquisition of a mobile studio and development of a new mobile division, and PS5 Discord integration should happen in the coming months.
