Report: Ubisoft Has Plans for Assassin’s Creed Japan Setting

After years and years of fan requests, it looks like an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan is finally going to happen. According to journalist and insider Jeff Grubb, who needs no introduction at this point, a credible source has said that that following the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Rift, Ubisoft plans to take the series to Japan.

Assassin’s Creed Japan might be one of Infinity’s settings

As a refresher for our readers, there are two Assassin’s Creed games in the works. One is the rumored game code named Rift, which reportedly features Valhalla character Basim. This game, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, was born out of a Valhalla expansion and will be a smaller, single-player title set in Baghdad. Rift is meant to be a stopgap title in what is a thin Ubisoft release schedule.

Then, there’s Infinity, which Ubisoft has confirmed the existence of. From what we’ve heard, Infinity is an evolving live-service platform which will feature multiple characters and settings on a somewhat ongoing basis. In the video above (via Reddit), Grubb said that he couldn’t confirm if this Japan-based game will be a setting in Infinity or not, but he believes that’s what his source was talking about. Taking into account what we’ve heard about Infinity from the reliable Schreier, it makes sense that Japan will be one of the game’s settings.

Fans of the series have been asking for an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan for a number of years but to no avail. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch Productions released hit PlayStation-exclusive Ghost of Tsushima, which was unanimously praised for its setting and sold like hot cakes. Many are of the view that Sucker Punch made the Assassin’s Creed Japan that Ubisoft didn’t.

In other news, God of War Ragnarok pre-orders are now live, and Square Enix has explained why Final Fantasy 16 ditched turn-based combat.
