Sony to Phase Out PS4 Games by FY 2025

If you haven’t managed to purchase a PS5 thus far, you might want to start making an extra effort now because it looks like Sony plans to phase out PS4 games by FY 2025. While the platform may still get some third-party games due to its massive install base, don’t expect to see any first-party games by that time. As a matter of fact, if Sony pulls the plug on cross-gen development soon, there’s a chance you’ll stop seeing first-party PS4 games well before FY 2025.

Expect some first-party PS4 games between FY 2022 and FY 2024

In a presentation delivered by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, the company revealed that it expects an equal split of PS5 exclusives and cross-gen PS4/PS5 games over the next two fiscal years. FY 2022 ends in March 2023, following which Sony should begin to phase out PS4 games. The slide in question also reveals a sharp increase in PC and mobile games by FY 2025.

Sony is placing a special emphasis on going beyond console, especially into the PC domain. As we reported earlier, the company expects its PC revenue to more than triple over the next financial year. Sony is seeking “a transformation from PlayStation’s current console-centric approach to a future where large elements of our community extend,” according to Ryan. Accordingly, Sony will be investing heavily into VR, mobile, cloud, and Metaverse. It also hopes to deliver better experiences through the revamped PS Plus, Discord integration, PS Store, and PS Direct. The latter will certainly be of use to players who have been unable to find a PS5 through traditional retailers and expect similar frustrations when it comes to the PSVR 2.

In other news, it looks like Housemarque’s Returnal is the next PlayStation exclusive headed to PC, and technology company TCL thinks a PS5 Pro is already in the works.
