Sony will be pushing for a leading role in the metaverse as it becomes a more common part of the entertainment medium. According to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, the acquisition of Bungie will help them to achieve that by improving Sony’s live service game capabilities and helping them become a more multiplatform company.
Sony and Bungie’s partnership
Sony won’t be leaving their single-player games behind. After all, games like Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and the upcoming God of War Ragnarok are those that will sell systems on their own. However, Sony is looking to spread its wings and head into the world of live service games, and the Bungie acquisition “will be a catalyst to enhance our live service game capabilities” and “represents a major step forward in becoming multiplatform” according to Yoshida in Sony’s latest strategy briefing.
Indeed, the publisher has already released several of its games on PC and has plans to release more in the future. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will be the next of their games to hit PC, supposedly in June although a date is yet to be confirmed. Sony even released MLB The Show 22 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, but it remains to be seen if this is something that will become more common.
Despite these seemingly early steps into the world of live service, PlayStation is already playing “a huge role in the social gaming revolution that’s nurturing the growth of the metaverse as a new entertainment medium” according to Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney, as reported by The Express Tribune. Indeed, Yoshida points towards Epic’s Fortnite as inspiration for its plans to create “a social space and live network space where games, music, movies, and anime intersect”. Many PlayStation fans are hoping this may eventually see the return of a platform like PlayStation Home that was on PS3 and has been rumored to be making a return eventually.
In other news, voice actor Jason Kelley seems to be teasing a Deathloop-related project on Twitter, although he insists it is not DLC. Elsewhere, some news may eventually be arriving next week for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2.
