Readers’ Opinion: Is PlayStation Plus Premium a Success or Disappointment?

PlayStation Plus Premium was announced today, with this newly updated PS Plus service alongside its Extra and Essential counterparts making up a revitalized version of Sony’s online platform. Promising to pack 700+ games into the subscription service for PS5 and PS4 gamers, this was the big announcement that many insiders and journalists had been reporting this week, and finally lifts the lid on what was previously known as ‘Project Spartacus’.

But was the announcement a success or disappointment? We want to know what you think in today’s Readers’ Opinion.

Our Opinion: Sony needs to offer something different to Xbox Game Pass

Paul writes… PS Plus Premium naturally goes toe-to-toe with Xbox Game Pass, and while I can understand Sony not wanting to match Microsoft’s willingness to put every exclusive it has onto the platform, it really needed to offer something different. 700+ games is a huge amount — but how many of those are going to be good?

Quantity doesn’t mean quality, and the games that Sony has led with for its announcement are all relatively recent releases that nonetheless have probably already been played by mostly everyone who wanted to play them. Death Stranding, God of War, Spider-Man: these are big PlayStation games, sure, but they’ve already been played by those interested in them.

If you’re not already signed up to PS Plus, chances are you aren’t going to be lured in by PS Plus Premium, whereas the opposite could be said for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and its relationship with Xbox Live. Maybe Sony will release a ridiculous library of games that covers every possible corner of its history, but considering that it still didn’t invest time into working out PS3 emulation, I’m not hopeful that PS Plus will be as strong a service as its Xbox rival.

In the last Readers’ Opinion, we asked which video game villain deserved a Will Smith slap following the Fresh Prince’s Oscars altercation with Chris Rock.

Archangel replied:

Gran Turismo 7 S-10 license test. Whoever decided the best way to test your skill is by driving an overpowered car with rain everywhere, including on the normal racing line is truly evil.

I played through the Arcade Mode of the original King of Fighters recently so I’d say Rugal deserves the big Willy more than anyone else, haha. Took me like 3 hours to win.
