PS5 System Software Update March 2022

PS5 VRR Release Date Hinted at by Sony

One of the most conspicuous missing features on the PS5 is Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. The console launched without VRR for reasons that Sony has never explained. Fortunately, it’s finally coming to PS5 with an update that’s scheduled to release soon.

When is PS5 getting VRR?

Unfortunately, we don’t have a solid release date for VRR on the PS5. The PlayStation Blog announcing it said the update would launch in “the coming months.” That means we’ve got a window of anywhere from April to December 2022.

On compatible displays, VRR syncs the display refresh rate to the PS5’s output. Doing this avoids screentearing and frame pacing issues. It also reduces input lag over standard vsync.

PS5 games will need to be patched to take full advantage of VRR. However, players can enable the feature on games that aren’t officially supported and turn it off if any issues occur. A list of games compatible with VRR will be released closer to the System Update that will deploy it.

Unfortunately, the blog post describing VRR support only mentions the feature working on PS5 games. So, those hoping to smooth out some of the issues in PS4 games like Bloodborne are likely out of luck. Also, the blog specifically states that VRR is supported “on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors.” If this is the case, it’s unfortunate since HDMI 2.0 is also compatible with VRR.

Opinion: Sony needs to step it up with PS5 system software updates.

Jason writes: Before the PS5 debuted, I figured it would iterate on the PS4’s system software. However, in a few ways, it’s a significant step backward. There’s no way to customize the home screen, no folder support, and no themes. The fact that the console is just now getting VRR (even though it’s been capable of it the entire time) just shows that Sony doesn’t put enough emphasis on the basic user experience.
