Square Enix has filed a fresh trademark application for 1990s Crystal Dynamics-developed platformer, Gex.
As spotted by Gematsu, the application was filed on December 15th, per the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s website, with Square Enix listed as the owner. Gex was previously owned by Eidos Interactive, which became parent company of Crystal Dynamics in 1998. When Eidos Interactive became a Square Enix property in 2009, Gex came with it.
The first game in the series released in 1995 on the PlayStation One, Sega Saturn, 3DO, and Windows. The second and third games released in 1998 and 1999, respectively. According to folks over at Unseen64, a fourth entry was in development for the PlayStation 2, but was later cancelled. Only two pieces of concept art were ever seen of the cancelled title, and the last thing ever released in the franchise was a book in 2000.
Then, in 2017, Square Enix made a series of Eidos properties available as part of Square Enix Collective – a program allowing developers to create games based on old IPs. Gex was part of the collection.
It’s unclear if Square Enix is merely renewing its ownership of the trademark or if someone ended up making a new Gex game. We’ll find out in due course and keep our readers posted.
