Final Fantasy XIV is so successful that Square Enix has made the difficult decision of not making any more money from it for the time being. The game’s physical and digital versions are officially being pulled from stores due to server congestion.
In a note to players, producer and director Naoki Yoshida apologized for the ongoing issues once again. To compensate for the frustration, Square Enix has extended the free gameplay period for an additional 14 days on top of the previously announced seven-day free period. The caveat is that you must own the full version of the game and have an active subscription by Tuesday, December 21st.
There’s also some bad news for those who are currently availing Final Fantasy XIV‘s free trial. Firstly, free trial players will not be able to log in outside of late night and early morning hours. Secondly, new registrations have been suspended, so should you want to turn your free version into a fully registered product, you won’t be able to do so at present.
“These temporary suspensions will be phased in over the next few days as we work with our retail partners,” Yoshida added. “We will be coordinating with them as swiftly as possible, but please bear in mind that this will be a gradual process.”
Square Enix will also cease marketing activities for Final Fantasy XIV until further notice. However, certain advertisements will remain in place due to the way they have been set up. For now, the company is prioritizing increasing server capacity and adding more data centers to accommodate the traffic.
