Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a high-fantasy RPG-inspired spinoff from the Borderlands franchise, will reportedly feature six different classes to choose from, as well as the ability to multiclass and an array of armors and amulets that will boost players’ stats. Senior Producer Kayla Belmore describes a few of the notable changes and additions to Wonderlands from the Borderlands franchise, comparing it to the Assault on Dragon Keep DLC released for Borderlands 2 in 2013.
In an interview with Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, Belmore revealed that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will offer six classes at the beginning of the game—a departure from the Borderlands series’ mainstay four-class/character system. She also notes that player’s appearances will be “entirely separated” from their class, allowing players to customize the way they look regardless of what classes they’ve chosen. Each class’ skill tree will feature two binary class skills to choose from, with players allocating skill points as they choose.
On top of this, Belmore notes, the game will later allow players to choose a second class—a feature common in traditional tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and JRPGs like Final Fantasy XII—adding even more depth and possibilities in class combinations.
A recently-revealed gameplay trailer for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands depicted several characters using magic spells. To this, Kayla clarifies that magic will be separate from character classes, meaning that any character of any class can use any spell, regardless of their skills. Furthermore, the same will go for armor; another new addition to the series which, while providing class-based stat boosts, will not be locked to any specific class.
Creative director Matt Cox states that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will focus heavily on building characters through loot and gear, rather than character classes. While skill trees are kept relatively simple, the game’s wide variety of amulets, armors, rings, magic, and weapons offer a multitude of character build possibilities. The game will even feature a traditional stat system featuring DEX and STR, to which players can allocate “hero points” and further add to their character’s abilities.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands releases on March 25, 2022.
