The Hitman fanbase exploded when a recent documentary seemed to suggest Hitman 3 was in development. Though the wording was (likely intentionally) vague, many seemed to believe that Hitman 3 was imminent. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear as though this project is in any tangible form at the moment.
Danny O’Dwyer, who made the documentary, clarified the status of Hitman 3 following the documentary’s release:
For the record, our doc never said Hitman 3 was in development, only that it was planned, and they were considering the episodic model for it. The only thing we confirmed was that some of the Copenhagen studio was working on a new project which sounds like a new IP.

It definitely seems like IO Interactive has some sort of an idea for what it wants Hitman 3 to be. However, no sort of active development has begun at the moment. That doesn’t mean IO isn’t keeping itself busy, though.
IO is apparently working on a new title, one that appears to be a new IP. The developer hasn’t really ventured outside of the Hitman or Kane & Lynch franchises, so it will definitely be interesting to see what the developer has planned for this. As IO is an independent studio now, it’s unknown whether it would team up with Hitman 2 publisher Warner Bros. Interactive once more. It could even self-publish the title, though again, this is all speculation for now.
While Hitman 3 seems likely, there’s nothing concrete to say about it at this time. In the meantime, IO is still hard at work bringing content to Hitman 2. It just recently got a new Sniper Assassin map, taking players to a frigid prison in Siberia.
