While Marvel’s Spider-Man basks in universal praise, it is not without criticism. One common critique against is that secondary villains never receive their due. They appear because the plot deems it necessary, sans explanation or any depth. Creative Director Bryan Intihar has previously explained that other corners, such as fleshing out Silver Sable, were cut in the interest of time and to avoid padding. Interestingly, the same is true of excised moments for the Sinister Six, some of whom once had missions dedicated to them.
In a spoiler-filled interview with Game Informer, Intihar was asked about the development team’s combining boss fights, such as Rhino with Scorpion. According to Intihar, these plans came together rather fortuitously. Because certain moments necessitated excision, other incredible scenes were brought to life.
Originally we had more missions with Rhino, Vulture, Electro that were outside of what you saw in the final game. But what happened was that, A. we were kind of running out of time, and B. it felt like a lot of fluff… it didn’t hit the quality bar. At the end of the day we wanted to say, “quality is most important.” Whether it’s 20 hours, 22 hours that doesn’t matter. It’s “how do we make the highest quality experience?”
…What we ended up doing was we started trimming down these extra missions and activities, and started condensing things. And the beauty of that is things like the Electro-Vulture boss fight actually ended up being way better than having the two separate fights that we were going to do. It tied better into the story and the flow of act three, so it was almost like the constraint actually ended up making for a better product at the end of the day.
You can check out the interview in its entirety below. Talk about villain-specific missions landing on the cutting room floor begins around the 11:10 timestamp.
Insomniac hasn’t begun sharing potential sequel details just yet. However, given Spider-Man’s record-breaking success, there’s no doubt one is on the horizon. While we wait for such news to break, we still have more to look forward to from this release.
The studio’s DLC roll out lasts until December 2018. Black Cat rests at the heart of “The Heist,” the first batch of DLC, which launches on October 23, 2018.
