Co-Founder and Vice President of Creativity at Rockstar Games Dan Houser spoke to Vulture regarding previous criticism of the company games’ depiction of women. In particular, he addressed a perceived lack of empowered female characters. You can expect some women in Red Dead Redemption 2 to be strong and others to be weak, but the men in the game will be getting the same treatment. The goal is to create diverse characters across the board, regardless of gender.
House discussed the range of women characters in Red Dead Redemption 2:
This old intellectual called Lillian Powell, who’s come back to the South from New York, who’s almost like a Dorothy Parker character. There are also ones who are weak and ones who are weak and become strong and ones who think they’re strong but are not. And that goes for men, too.
Additionally, players can expect the era to play a large role in the personalities and morals of the women in the game. It was a pivotal time that will, hopefully, lead to some character depth. Houser expanded on this idea, stating:
It was a time when women were beginning to question [their roles], and the Wild West was an area where people could invent themselves for the first time; many of the people who were inventing themselves were women. They were no longer constrained by society, because there was no society.
If the characters’ personalities are as detailed as the world seems to be, we’ll be in for a treat.
Red Dead Redemption 2 releases on October 26, 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
