We’ve been following Hidetaka Suehiro’s The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories since it was announced, all the way through Arc System Works’ teases and promotion, It has steadily become clear what The Missing actually is. At the same time, there were still more cards to play, and the new launch trailer for The Missing has jumped from the quirky and macabre to downright scary.
Take a look.
As we learned before, The Missing follows protagonist J.J. as she searches a strange island for her missing friend, Emily. Part of this journey leads to J.J. gaining the power to regenerate her body from serious injuries, thus leading to a puzzle/platformer experience based around solving puzzles with self-inflicted injury.
As messed up as that is, the new launch trailer adds some context to it all, and it looks like J.J. is being haunted by Emily in some form, with a disturbing voice taunting her as she flees from some pretty scary-looking enemies. Previously, we’ve mostly seen J.J. navigating traps and obstacles, so seeing some of the more nasty, antagonistic forces here is actually a bit striking.
Of course, Suehiro and his team at White Owls strives to deliver what they feel are meaningful messages in their games, and The Missing is the debut effort of that. What will we uncover between the lines with The Missing? We’ll find out when it launches on October 11, 2018.
