New Details on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Romance Options and Gameplay

Assassins Creed Odyssey Romance

A recent Reddit AMA with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s creative director, Jonathan Dumont, revealed a slew of new details. The AMA brought news of the game’s launching with a reversible cover, but also unveiled details concerning romance and gameplay.

On the romance front, Ubisoft has made it clear they are leaving it to player choice. If players choose Kassandra as their main character, they are free to have her romance either a man or a woman. The relationships that spawn from these options will have depth. According to Dumont, “there will be many different opportunities for romancing characters throughout your journey, which you can opt out of at any time. Romancing plays just as much of a part in the choices during your odyssey as other decisions.” As for “romantic scenes,” Dumont says success in this regard is wholly dependent on how good a player is at romancing a character. He does note, however, that lovers will stay fully clothed in these instances.

For the gameplay side of things, the naval warfare is not as robust as that of Black Flag. Progression throughout the game will unlock weapon and ship upgrades. The same can be said for cosmetic customization options. Additionally, recruiting crew members adds “specific perks to your ship.” Recruits aren’t only beneficial to ship combat either. Similar to the Brotherhood in AC Brotherhood, the recruits help with ground combat and can act as distractions for enemy NPCs.

As for naval combat itself, Dumont explains,

“Ships and naval have a strong place in our game, but they’re less the core element of the experience than in Black Flag. Gameplay is also different from BF as we have a more accessible and arcade approach, focusing on the immediate fun. We are true to the era, so no cannon but we have arrows, javelins and more emphasis on cleaving and ramming.  Nothing better than cleave a ship in half to see her crew devoured by sharks! But of course there is also a progression and recruitable crew for players that want to go deeper.”

Another interesting tidbit reveals more about the versatility of combat. When asked if shields are in the game, Dumont says the following:

“Yes, Spartans did use shields, but our Hero is a mercenary, not a Spartan soldier. Our gameplay is much more versatile than that of Origins and a shield was not suited to it, so we replaced shields with dodging, rolling and parrying mechanics. The parry mechanics gives a bit more of feel of old school AC Fight of counter attack, while still retaining fight mechanics of Origins. I can’t speak for the future of the franchise for social stealth and parkour.”

The creative director also teases the function of branching dialogue trees and how they affect the game overall.

“Yes [player decisions will affect the ending]. As for how dialogue choice will impact the game’s endings, we don’t want to give too much away, players will experience that for themselves. But your actions and choices will leave to different endings. True for other quests too!”

Perhaps Dumont’s most fascinating response is found in his answering what makes Odyssey an AC title.

“We are absolutely an AC game. AC games are about experiencing a key moment in history, a place and time that were host to major historical events. In AC Odyssey players will visit Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War, meeting historical characters like Socrates and Hippocrates. With our new dialogue system, players will be able to truly interact with history, which is something we’re really excited about. So get ready to debate with Socrates!

“From a lore perspective, we wanted to tell the story of how First Civ artifacts created what would become the Templars vs Assassins story, which took place long before the Brotherhood.

“Also, AC Odyssey is a continuation of the modern day story from Layla, so players will pick-up right after Origins.”

Fans will get to judge for themselves how this entry stands among the rest when Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on October 5.
