PlayStation had its biggest Black Friday sale this year but it was Nintendo Switch that truly surprised industry analysts, it seems. Adobe Digital Insights has released its online sales report for the recent Thanksgiving holiday period, which includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, and noted that Nintendo Switch was the only gaming console that consistently appeared in the top 5 best-selling products over the period.
It was only the day before Thanksgiving that a PlayStation product appeared in the top 5, and it was PS VR coming in at number 4.
Interestingly, Nintendo Switch didn’t get any significant price drops or discounts during this period, leading one analyst firm to tell its clients that it wasn’t expecting “such a record-breaking streak.”
Jeffries analyst Atul Goyal noted that although Sony had a great holiday period, PlayStation was heavily discounted whereas Switch wasn’t (the standard 1TB PS4 had its price slashed from $299 to $199 during the holiday). He predicts that Switch’s sales won’t slow down any time soon either. “This strong sales is going to create a robust installed base, which is where games software will monetize over the next 5-7 years,” Goyal told clients while highlighting the success of games like Zelda, Mario, and Splatoon.
