In an update coming out today in North America and tomorrow in Europe, the PlayStation 4’s Media Player app will receive 4K video playback support on PlayStation 4 Pro, as well as 4K virtual reality video content support on PS4 Pro for PSVR owners.
“Following this update, 4K videos in mp4 format saved on a USB stick or home server can be played on the Media Player app (remember, you’ll also need a 4K compatible TV to watch the videos in 4K),” Sony’s John Koller says of the 4K video support on PS4 Pro. Your home server will appear as a media option in the Media Player automatically.
Since PSVR’s display resolution is 1920xRGBx1080, 4K VR videos will be displayed in a higher image quality compared to HD VR videos. “Capture stunning 360 degree 4K footage, and then immerse yourself in that footage in VR at home — just as if you’re right back in the scene you shot,” Koller adds.
As a reminder, PS4 Pro doesn’t support 4K Blu-rays.
