10 Best Video Game Couples

It’s easy to dismiss Valentine’s Day as a corporate holiday and an excuse to drive the sales of chocolates and flowers, but we here at PlayStation LifeStyle like to look at the bright side (we’re hopeless romantics after all). Love is a big part of everybody’s life, so it only makes sense that romance bleeds into gaming. To celebrate this special day where romance is in the air, we wanted to look back at some of our favorite gaming couples that have appeared on PlayStation.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of the 10 best video game couples. The only rule was that the characters had to appear in a game that released on PlayStation consoles, since we are a PlayStation site after all. That means some classic pairings like Mario and Peach (or Marcus and Dom) didn’t make our list. There were still plenty of great characters to choose from, though, so it wasn’t really much of a limiting factor.

Best Video Game Couples
Big Boss and EVA

Can love bloom on a battlefield? That's the question that Metal Gear Solid asks and answers many times throughout the series. One of the best romances is between Naked Snake and EVA in Metal Gear Solid 3. While the two may only know each other's codenames at the time, they manage to create a bond despite the double-crossing that goes on in the end. EVA, or Big Mama as she would become known as, ends up dedicating her life to Big Boss' mission, and gives birth to his clones.
Ico and Yorda

Not every relationship is a sexual one, and there's no denying that Ico and Yorda develop a bond during the events of Ico. From the adorable handholding mechanic to Yorda's mysterious past, it's impossible not to become invested over time. The PlayStation 2 classic may end on a somber note, but the journey is an unforgettable one.
Cloud and Barret

Gamers have debated whether Tifa or Aerith was the right romantic choice for Final Fantasy VII's Cloud for over 20 years, but the correct answer is a dark horse contender. I'm talking about Barret, the tough single father with a heart of gold. If players make the right choices (and it's very easy to screw up) then they can go on a date with the beefy hunk. It's clearly the one true pairing for the game's spiky-haired protagonist.
James and Mary

Not every love story is a happy one, and few games demonstrate it as well as Silent Hill 2. The game revolves around James Sunderland and the lengths he'll go to discover the truth about his wife's death. Sadly, that truth is a dark one, and it's one of the most haunting revelations in a horror game.
Max and Chloe

There's a lot of cute couples, but few are as hella cute. That's how I would explain Life is Strange's Max and Chloe, two former best friends that reunite after years apart. Their rekindled friendship is far from normal, though, as Max discovers she has the ability to rewind time, and the duo goes on a memorable adventure that has them discovering the dark side of their small town.
Nate and Elena

Nathan Drake is clearly not perfect husband material. He's a criminal who loves the thrill of a gunfight, and isn't the most honest person. That said, Elena still adores the knucklehead even if he can be the absolute worst. They end up making their dysfunctional relationship work, and are better off for it.
Boss and Johnny Gat

When most gamers think of romance scenes in games they tend to think of Bioware RPGs (Shepared x Garrus, all the way) or awful ones in David Cage games. However, my mind goes straight to the fantastic ones found in Saints Row IV. Out of these humorous scenes, the most memorable is one between the Boss and their long-time friend Johnny Gat. The two have been through just about everything together, and boy do they take it to the next level.
Tidus and Yuna

Final Fantasy X can be extremely corny, but it ends up making a lasting impact. The romance between Tidus and Yuna is built upon well, and it leads to an extremely heart-wrenching goodbye (which is one of the best localization changes ever) where Yuna confesses her love. It's a moment that leaves an impact, although you might want to forget about the entire game dedicated to lessening a stellar ending.
Sam and Lonnie

Gone Home pulls off an impressive feat as they manage to make the player invested in a relationship that they never get to see play on-screen. Everything about Sam and Lonnie's blossoming romance is experienced in the form of journal entries, and environmental storytelling. Despite this, it manages to tell a story of a young relationship that feels far more real than most of the ones seen in gaming.
Yu and Chie

If you're like me, you probably made a huge mistake when you played Persona 4 and ended up dating Rise. Sure, the pop idol is amazing, but she's not the type of girl that watches kung-fu flicks and eats beef bowls until she ends up in the meat dimension. That's why I always regretted not choosing Chie — the true number one girl.
