Take-Two Licensing Games for Films, Wants Creative Control

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told MCV that the company has licensed some of its existing properties for future films. Take-Two is the publishing distributor that owns Rockstar Games and 2K Games, two of the largest video game companies. This means that beloved properties such as Grand Theft AutoXCOM, and Borderlands could see a big screen adaptation one day.

Zelnick is aware that films based upon video games haven’t always been great. “The track record of the conversion of video game IP to motion pictures is spotty at best,” he told MCV. Due to this, he’s against Take-Two using their own money for these films, and instead wants to have a level of creative control on the product so it doesn’t end up like the Super Mario Bros. film. “We are certainly not going to use our own balance sheet to invest in motion pictures and TV. If other people want to license them and we can retain creative control, we are open-minded.”

While several properties have already been licensed, Take-Two wasn’t ready to announce any of the deals. Films can often take years before they enter production (if they ever do), so it makes sense to not announce something as big as a Grand Theft Auto film until it’s a sure thing that is happening. While it may not be immediate, fans can expect to see their favorite Take-Two properties in movies sometime down the line.

Let us know in the comments below which Take-Two films you’d like to see made!
