Report: The Deus Ex Franchise Is Taking a Break

Because of Eidos Montreal’s current workload, and the reception of 2016’s Mankind Divided, it looks like there won’t be a major new Deus Ex title for some time.

According to a report from Eurogamer, the majority of Eidos Montreal is currently working on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, while a smaller group is helping Crystal Dynamics with The Avengers project. That smaller team is also beginning work on the second Marvel game in the Square Enix partnership, which is reportedly based around Guardians of the Galaxy and will be lead by Eidos Montreal.

When Eurogamer contacted Square Enix for a comment on the report, they received this statement from Eidos Montreal:

While we are still working on expanding the Deus Ex Universe, along with creating new content and updates for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, we’re also devoting our talents towards working with Crystal Dynamics and Marvel on The Avengers project.

As the report adds, a third Deus Ex game in the trilogy started by Human Revolution would clear up all the remaining story threads from Mankind Divided, but with the franchise potentially on hiatus, it remains to be seen how – or through what medium – the story will end.

The final piece of Season Pass DLC for Mankind Divided, A Criminal Past, releases on February 23.
