Nothing beats sneaking up on an unsuspecting guard and making them no longer a threat. That’s exactly why stealth games are so much fun, and there are plenty of them on PlayStation 4. Since there are so many, though, it can be difficult to choose what PS4 stealth game is actually worth playing. To make this choice easier, we’ve put together a list to help you decide on what PS4 stealth games are right for you. Be it an open-world title or an independent title with a unique twist.
It’s also worth noting that a lot of action games feature stealth elements. That meant some great games were kept off this list since they weren’t designed as a stealth game primarily. Even so, it’s worth pointing out that the Batman games, Deus Ex , Far Cry 4 , The Last of Us , and Shadow of Mordor all have great stealth mechanics. So check those out if you want a different type of experience where stealth is largely optional

PS4 Stealth Games Buyer's Guide
Alekhine's Gun
Not all stealth games can be winners, and part of a buyer's guide is telling you what to avoid. Such is the case with Alekhine's Gun , Maximum Games' third-person stealth title set during the Cold War. Despite being delayed multiple times, the Hitman -esque title was filled with technical issues and just wasn't fun. Avoid this.
Alien Isolation
A mixture of stealth and horror, Alien Isolation is a terrifying experience. If you're looking to experience some jump scares alongside sneaking around, then the game's Xenomorph will be happy to oblige. Creative Assembly has crafted one of the best horror games on PS4 and one that stealth fans will get a kick out of as well.
Aragami
Stylish indie stealth title Aragami has players teleporting in the shadows, and it's one-hit kill gameplay can be very satisfying. It's a little rough around the edges, and its difficulty can feel poorly tuned in some sections, but ultimately it's unique enough to stand out. Check it out if you've already played some of the top titles on the list.
Assassin's Creed Chronicles
While Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series is known for its open-world gameplay, Assassin's Creed Chronicles showed that the formula could actually work in 2D. While the trio of Chronicles titles got worse as they went along, a good time can at least be had with the first title — China . Fans of the series that are looking for something new should definitely give it a look.
Assassin's Creed
Despite the PlayStation 4 still being relatively young, there are plenty of Assassin's Creed games to pick from on the system. Some of the titles are good (Syndicate ), others are great (Black Flag ), while one is rather rough around the edges (Unity ). Either way, all three are solid games and players can do far worse. It's also worth noting that the Ezio Collection is available and allows PS4 owners to replay all of Ezio's classic adventures (Assassin's Creed 2 through Brotherhood ).
CounterSpy
Dynamighty's CounterSpy is a unique take on stealth and blends the platforming and third-person shooter genres. The precedurally generated action title has players sneaking into bases and trying to prevent a nuclear war. It's a really satisfying title, and worth checking out.
Dishonored
PS4 owners can experience Arkane Studios' first-person stealth game thanks to Dishonored: Definitive Edition , and they should since it's a great game. Dishonored gives players the freedom to play however they want from a sneaky pacifist to a brutal murderer. The choice is yours, and the game will adapt accordingly. Also available is the excellent sequel, Dishonored 2 .
Hitman
Surprisingly, the best title on this list might just be Hitman . The episodic title from IO Interactive has been everything that fans have wanted, and gives players an entertaining sandbox to play with. It's a gigantic step up from Absolution , and absolutely worth picking up now that Season One has wrapped up.
Metal Gear Solid V
Whatever qualms one may have against Konami, there is no denying that Hideo Kojima departed from the company by creating one of the best PlayStation 4 titles. Metal Gear Solid V is by far the best playing title in the series, and while it's story may leave the player wanting more, the fantastic gameplay makes up for it. The game gives players a staggering amount of freedom, and it's the only stealth game (that I know of at least) that allows you to make a horse to defecate on command.
République
Originally released as an episodic series, République can now be played in one go. Influenced by 1984 , the game's plot deals with the player trying to escape a facility. It features a solid mixture of exploration and action, and is worth checking out.
Shadwen
S hadwen shows that a fantastic idea isn't enough to make a game worth playing. The title's gimmick is that time only moves when the player does a la Superhot . It's a fantastic premise for a stealth game, but sadly the execution here is rather janky. Filled with glitches, and never really hitting its stride, it's more forgettable than the must have it could've been.
Stealth Inc.
While Curve Digital may be best known for their publishing efforts, the studio is actually a quite talented developer as well. This can be seen in their Stealth Inc. series of stealth platformers that feature tight gameplay and forces players to solve some devious puzzles. While the first game is a good time, the sequel (Stealth Inc. 2 ) really refines the core gameplay and adds a Metroidvania layer on top of the fantastic gameplay. This is a must play.
Styx: Master of Shadows
The Unreal Engine powered Styx: Master of Shadows was a pleasant surprise in the genre. Cyanide's old-school influenced stealth title is perfect for hardcore fans that are willing to overlook some rough spots (stiff combat and some dated mechanics). A sequel is also in the works to release in 2017 called Styx: Shards of Darkness .
The Swindle
The best sales pitch for The Swindle is that it basically is a stealth version of Spelunky . The game has the player breaking into mansions to steal valuables, while gaining new abilities and over time. On top of that, it's also a rogue-like with randomly generated levels and an addictive core gameplay loop that will keep the player coming back.
Thief
The reboot of Thief was a disappointing one. Not only did the first-person stealth title feel dated when compared to its contemporaries, it also had technical issues that marred the whole experience. Throw in some shoddy A.I. and you've got a completely skippable title.
Volume
Mike Bithell's Volume is heavily inspired by the original Metal Gear Solid titles. That means fans of the action in those early stealth games will be in for a treat. Volume does a great job of updating the gameplay, while also presenting a sleek look on top of that. Plus, PSVR owners can even check out an exclusive campaign!
