Update: In an email to Kotaku, Armature director of operations Jack Mathews said, “We are shutting down the game because, bluntly, the costs of operating the game now exceed its income. This decision was not taken lightly internally, and was extremely sad to me personally. Armature put a lot of time, love and studio resources into both the game and the community, and we are extremely grateful to our community for their support in keeping this going as long as it could.”
Mathews later added that the decision to take Dead Star offline is purely a financial one to ensure the best possible future for the studio.
When the servers go offline, you’ll only be able to play the Dead Star tutorial.
Original Story: Released back in April for PlayStation 4, and available as a PlayStation Plus free game during launch month, multiplayer space combat game Dead Star is going offline on November 1, 2016. Ahead of this, it’s no longer available through the PlayStation Store in North America (it’s still up in Europe right now) or through Steam.
On the Dead Star website, developer Armature Studio said, “Online functionality (including multiplayer) for Dead Star will cease November 1, 2016.” No further reasoning was given for the shutdown.
In a thread about Dead Star going offline, developer ChrisF-ARM responded to someone asking if players can rent a server to play the game. “That is something we explored, alongside any other possible alternatives we could imagine,” he said. “Unfortunately, none were viable due to the scope of work they’d require.”
More clarification regarding the shutdown of Dead Star should come shortly.
