Microsoft Executive “Surprised” By Lack of 4K Disc Player in PS4 Pro

When Sony revealed that its upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro hardware won’t include a 4K disc player, it surprised and disappointed many. The company even went as far as saying that any such support won’t be added post-launch because it believes video streaming is the trend going forward. Microsoft’s Head of Planning for the Xbox division, Albert Penello, has revealed that he was taken aback by Sony’s decision as well.

According to The Guardian, Penello has “a lot of respect for what Sony does” but “analytically,” thinks Sony’s move was both interesting and surprising.

The lack of a 4K disc player, given Sony’s media background, was a surprise. Looking at what they’ve done historically, I don’t think many people would have predicted that.

He also thought it was interesting that both companies independently came up with the similar idea of having a more powerful console, referring to the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio. “Even though the tactics are different, the idea, fundamentally, is very similar,” he explained. “If you step away from the salty internet commentary, we had a group of people working on it for a couple of years.”

While the PS4 Pro is ready for launch this November, Xbox Scorpio won’t be out until next year.
