It looks like the layoffs at Sony London earlier today was sadly just the beginning of Sony’s busy day. The company confirmed to Polygon that there have been “a reduction in headcount” at Sony Interactive Entertainment San Diego. An employee affected by the layoffs estimates that 40-50 people were let go from the MLB: The Show developer.
It seems that the layoff stems from two projects being either terminated or significantly downsized at SIE San Diego. This includes Kill Strain, which will continue to receive support despite the layoffs, and an unannounced project. It’s worth noting that none of the MLB: The Show or Drawn to Death teams has been impacted by these reductions. So fans of those two games can rest easy.

As projects are completed, it is natural to review and restructure teams around current and future needs. Hopefully all of the talented former employees at Sony Interactive Entertainment San Diego will land on their feet. It’s never good to see layoffs happening, although it’s becoming a common occurrence in the industry. Downsizing regularly occurs after projects are completed, as studios don’t need as many hands while they are in-between projects.
