Want to play NBA 2K17 before it’s out? For NBA fans, I imagine the answer is a resounding “yes.” In a press release, 2K has announced “The Prelude,” a free downloadable piece of content for NBA 2K17, which lets players take to the court before the basketball sim’s official release date of September 20.
However, and as expected, NBA 2K17 The Prelude isn’t the full game, but a vertical slice of the game’s MyCareer mode. Players who download The Prelude will “choose from multiple authentic Division I collegiate programs and have the ability to boost their stock for the NBA Draft.” Additionally, The Prelude will offer “enhanced” MyPlayer personalization through the game’s new face scan tech from the MyNBA2K app, which we reported about earlier this week.

During “The Prelude”, players will watch their draft stock fluctuate dynamically based on their performance across the participation of multiple authentic college games. In true cinematic form, they’ll also catch a glimpse of exclusive MyCAREER scenes through their customized avatar, which include interactions with high school coaches, teammates, and more. Players’ in-game performance during college play will ultimately influence where they are drafted upon entering the league in NBA 2K17.
Also include in The Prelude is a 2KU, a tutorial featuring college coaching great “Coach K.” In the tutorial, players will be taught the fundamental basketball strategies like pick and roll, proper defensive positioning ball movement, boxing out and more.
Not bad. While it’s not a full-fledged demo, it’s certainly a nice appetizer for the real deal. NBA 2K17 shoots out this September 20 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
