July 2016 Digital Sales Report: Console Market up 11.3%, Black Ops 3 #1 Again

SuperData’s worldwide digital sales report reveals that total market sales for July 2016 were up 9.5% year-over-year to $5.9 billion. This includes an increase of 11.3% in the console market “due to an abundance of AAA releases in 2016,” an increase of 16.3% in mobile revenue, and a decline of 12.4% in pay-to-play MMO.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 placed in first on the console chart thanks to the release of the Descent map pack, while FIFA 16 showed year-on-year growth compared to FIFA 15. Overwatch, meanwhile, fell to 5th on console (it was #1 on PC), which SuperData says is an “expected result of pay-to-play games’ upfront monetization strategy.”

Here’s the top five grossing console games by worldwide revenue for July 2016, according to SuperData:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  2. FIFA 16
  3. Grand Theft Auto V
  4. The Division
  5. Overwatch

SuperData’s also reporting that Pokemon Go is the most successful mobile game launch in history, seeing record first month downloads and revenue. The success of Pokemon Go also helped the 3DS, as hardware sales were up 50% year-over-year, and combined sales of Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and Pokemon X/Y nearly doubled.

Do you think No Man’s Sky and Madden NFL 17 will place in the August chart?
