Citing NPD data, Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One was the best-selling console of July 2016 in the United States. This marks the first time since October 2015 that the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 in the US.
Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said, “We’re honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours.”
Aaron Greenberg, Head of Xbox Games Marketing, added, “Thanks to everyone who helped make #XboxOne the #1 selling console in July according to #NPD, nice to be back on top!”
The win is likely thanks to the discounts Microsoft was offering on the Xbox One ahead of the Xbox One S launch earlier this month, with Microsoft adding that the excitement over its E3 2016 showing also helped to boost sales.
It’s possible the Xbox One could repeat at #1 this month, with Nichols adding that the 2TB Xbox One is “sold out in the U.K. and is nearly sold out in the U.S.” The 500GB and 1TB versions of the Xbox One S come out on August 23.
The full July 2016 NPD report covering industry sales and the top 10 best-selling games of the month will be available next week.
Do you think Overwatch will win the month of July in the US, as it did in June?
