Neverwinter Expansion Storm King’s Thunder Is Coming to PS4 & Xbox One

Released yesterday on PlayStation 4 as a free-to-play title, MMORPG Neverwinter will be getting the free Storm King’s Thunder expansion in the future.

Hitting PC on August 16, and PS4 and Xbox One “at a later date,” Storm King’s Thunder is the 10th official expansion for Neverwinter and includes a new end-game campaign, a new dungeon tier, and a unique story based on an upcoming adventure from Wizards of the Coast.

Here’s the description:

Similar to the Storm King’s Thunder adventure coming to Dungeons & Dragons later this year, Neverwinter’s new expansion sees giants invade Neverwinter. Adventurers will travel north to Bryn Shander – the heart of the Ten Towns – to investigate the sudden presence of Frost Giants in the region. In order to fight off these colossal invaders, players must team up with popular characters from Dungeons & Dragons lore, including Catti-brie, Wulfgar and Harshnag.

In addition to the new Frost Giants story content, Storm King’s Thunder also introduces a brand new end-game campaign and new adventure zones for high-level players, including Bryn Shander, Cold Run and The Lonelywood. The expansion also marks the debut of a new dungeon tier with the addition of the new Tier 3 dungeon, Fangbreaker Island. With the release of Storm King’s Thunder, adventurers will also be able to equip their characters with new high-level gear.

Not requiring PlayStation Plus, Neverwinter for PS4 is a 13GB download from the PlayStation Store and includes all nine previous expansions and eight classes. Every account is given two free character slots, and “everything you see in-game can be obtained with in-game currency.”

In terms of special content, anyone who completes the tutorial can head to the Rewards Claim Agent near the top of Protector’s Enclave to grab a free Electric Tiger mount (increases movement speed by 50%, doesn’t conduct electricity). Additionally, PlayStation Plus members will be given a free fashion and emote pack.

As Executive Producer Rob Overmeyer explained, they plan on supporting Neverwinter on PS4 for years to come:

Delivering the Neverwinter experience to the PlayStation 4 has been a major goal of ours for the last year, and we’re happy to be able to do so. Bringing full-fledged MMOs like Neverwinter or Star Trek Online to consoles was a big challenge with many unknowns, but what we’ve found is simply: gamers like games. We can’t wait to see how the PlayStation Nation takes to the game and look forward to supporting it for years to come.
