Two filmmakers from the UK, Nicola Caulfield and Anthony Caulfield, set up a Kickstarter campaign last week for a film that focuses on how “Sony PlayStation helped take Video Gaming to a whole new level for both developers and players.” Called From Bedrooms to Billions: The PlayStation Revolution, the project caught the attention of Sony boss, Shuhei Yoshida, who ended up backing the project.
Here’s what the Caulfields have to say about the 90-minute documentary:
The T-Rex demo was what many game developers first saw of the PlayStation, incredible 3D hardware that could compete with the arcades. The T-Rex, beautifully drawn for this campaign by legendary ZZAP! 64 and CRASH magazine artist Oliver Frey, gave developers the first glimpse of what may be possible in what was a sign to the entire games industry that a new era was to come.
We used Kickstarter to fund our previous films called From Bedrooms to Billions (the story of the UK video games industry) and The Amiga Years (the story of the Commodore Amiga) and we are turning to it now in the hope that you will support us to produce a standout and memorable film that not only celebrates the Sony PlayStation and what followed but importantly delves deeply into why and how it was created, how it was distributed against a fiercely competitive early 1990’s backdrop and then critically why it was a revolution for the video games industry.
The project has secured more than half of its £50,000 goal, with 18 more days left before its campaign ends.
