Resident Evil 5 for PS4 & Xbox One Ranges From 45fps – 60fps, Analysis Shows

Released earlier this week for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Resident Evil 5 targets 1080p/60fps on the new consoles, a Digital Foundry analysis against the Xbox 360 version shows.

However, as you can see in the video, Resident Evil 5 “doesn’t achieve the same level of solidness [as Resident Evil 6],” with frame-rates regularly dropping to the 50 – 55 range on PS4 whenever something is happening on-screen. As the video shows at 1:00, RE5 dips below 50fps at the beginning of the game when you’re just walking through a village.

Digital Foundry explained why the drops occur:

Essentially, whenever there are a couple of NPCs, or enemies on-screen, frame-rates regularly drop to around 50fps on both consoles, and indeed below.

This is particularly noticeable in an early boss fight… and frame-rates in this scene fall way below 60fps. It’s worth pointing out that, as soon as we turn the camera so that there are fewer enemies on-screen, then, actually, the game does almost hit 60fps on PS4. Unfortunately, Xbox One doesn’t come as close.

Despite some of the issues, Digital Foundry says the PS4/Xbox One versions are an improvement over the Xbox 360 version.

Already available digitally for PS4 and Xbox One, Resident Evil 5 will be released in North American retail stores on July 12.

Resident Evil 4 will be available this fall for PS4 and Xbox One.
