If you own The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition (or the base game + all DLC) on Steam, Bethesda will give you a free upgrade to the Skyrim Special Edition on October 28. If you own Skyrim on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, you’ll have to pay $60 on October 28 to get the Skyrim: Special Edition on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Asked why console owners have to pay again, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said that the reason is simply because the platforms are different:
“We’re making a game available for Xbox one and PS4. It already exists on PC, with high res textures.”
“Because it’s for a new platform. Just like any other remaster for new platforms.”
When the cheaper price of the Dishonored Definitive Edition was brought up, Hines said, “Price is the price. Every game is different.”
Hines added that the plan is to have console mods up and running “right away” at launch, and the Special Edition will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, but it’s up to Sony/Microsoft when pre-orders go live.
He also said there were “many reasons” why they decided to remaster Skyrim instead of Oblivion or Morrowind.
Based on the footage released so far, Digital Foundry believes Skyrim Special Edition runs at 1080p/30fps on PS4 and Xbox One.
