Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Sequel up to the Fans, TV Show in the Works

When Mirror’s Edge Catalyst launches on June 7 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, it will have been more than 7.5 years since the first Mirror’s Edge was released on last-gen consoles. As EA Studios Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund told Polygon in a recent feature, he hopes Catalyst sells well so they can make a third game:

“I hope that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst does extremely well. But in a world where it may or may not do well, it’s important for us to understand that everything that we do needs to be seen in the longer perspective. You can’t just look at it in isolation.”

“Whether or not there’s another Mirror’s Edge is going to be up to the people out there. If we can convince them that there’s a market for this, that people want to buy it, and if they tell us they want another one, then we’ll make another one. If the answer is that there wasn’t a big enough audience, it’s too difficult and too much work goes into making a game to build a game that we know people probably don’t want.”

Söderlund adds that there’s the potential for Catalyst to do extremely well and outperform the first Mirror’s Edge, but he knows it “probably won’t be a GTA in terms of audience size.”

Meanwhile, DICE Producer Amo Mostofi believes the Mirror’s Edge franchise “will have an exciting future,” while DICE’s Erik Odeldahl says, “We should definitely do another Mirror’s Edge… when it’s the right thing.”

In other Mirror’s Edge news, Deadline has revealed that Endemol Shine Studios (Big Brother, The Biggest Loser) acquired the rights for a female-centered action series based on the franchise.

Endemol Shine Studios President Sharon Hall said, “We clearly see Mirror’s Edge as a franchise for the global TV audience. It has a strong female protagonist, a wildly rabid fan base and a worldwide brand that Electronic Arts and EA DICE have done an amazing job establishing.”

Further details about the TV show weren’t revealed.
