Playstation Store Sale Weekly Deals Top Picks May 17

It’s Wednesday, and that can only mean it’s time for another episode of PSN Store Weekly Deals Top Picks, the video series where we bring to you two of the highlights from Sony’s latest digital sale.

This time around, it is 505 Games that is hosting a publisher sale, ensuring Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a shoo-in at $4.99. In anticipation of Blood and Wine releasing later this month, CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is on sale replete with the expansion pass for $48.74.

What's Homefront?

Homefront: The Revolution may seem like the second entry in the Homefront series, but is actually a reboot. The first-person shooter takes place in the near-future and focuses on Americans fighting against a North Korean invasion. The original game, simply titled Homefront, came out in 2011.
Features

Taking place in 2029, the reboot will feature an open-world campaign for players to explore. In addition to this, there will also be a cooperative mode that is completely separate from the single-player.
This Isn't Homefront 2

There's a reason why the title isn't Homefront 2. The developer explained the reasoning by saying that "everything is new." So while it shares the same concept as the 2011 shooter, it's a fresh take on it. It also means gamers won't be missing out if they haven't played the PS3 original as this is a "complete reboot."
Development Troubles

The Revolution was originally announced in 2014, and has seen a lot of changes during development. This stems from when the original studio developing it, Crytek UK, wasn't being paid for their work. Further complicating matters, the game's publisher, THQ, also went bankrupt.
Deep Silver Saved The Game

Thankfully for gamers, Deep Silver purchased the rights to Homefront in 2014. The publisher then affirmed that the game won't become vaporware and it would see release.
Debut Game

2014 also saw the closure of Crytek UK. Most of the staff then reformed under the banner Dambuster Studios, however, and kept working on Homefront: The Revolution.
Gamescom Reveal

After the rocky start, the first-person shooter was reintroduced in 2015 at Gamescom. The trailer that was shown thanked fans for their patience, and Deep Silver detailed the open world nature of the game.
Originally Linear

While Homefront: The Revolution has an open-world filled with three different districts to explore, it was originally designed as a linear experience under THQ. Dambuster then decided to go in the game's current direction, and the developer feels like the game has "benefited enormously" from the change.
Co-Op Combat

One of the biggest draws to The Revolution is its cooperative multiplayer. Called the Resistance mode, up to four players can tackle missions together. It features a full progression system, and players will have to work as a team in order to be successful.
City of Brotherly Love

Unlike the original, which took place in Colorado, the sequel will take place in Philadelphia. Players will get to explore three districts of the historically important city. Color coded, Philly is split into the fully invaded Green Zone, the ghetto Yellow Zone, and the bombed out Red Zone, which is where the resistance is headquartered.
PAX Prime Preview

PlayStation LifeStyle's Mark Labbe checked out Homefront: The Revolution at PAX Prime 2015. In his preview, he expressed interest in the game's premise, but was disappointed by how much it felt like Far Cry. Two positive takeaways were the impressive weapon upgrade system, which has players collecting materials, and the game's use of motorbikes.
Release date

It's been a rocky road for Homefront: The Revolution, but the FPS will finally be out May 17. Since it's not a cross-gen title, it's coming out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Closed Beta

An Xbox One exclusive closed beta took place in February of this year letting gamers go hands-on with Dambuster's debut title. Impressions were widely negative, but the studio blamed the myriad of technical issues on an old build.
Pre-Order Bonuses

There's a batch of bonuses that players will get for pre-ordering Homefront. This includes the Revolutionary Spirit pack that includes an exclusive motorbike skin, and a golden pistol. It also unlocks several cooperative bonuses early including the sniper scope.
Expansion Pass

Deep Silver has also announced that the game will be supported post-launch with multiple DLC packs. All of these can be purchased in the game's Expansion Pass. All of the DLC will focus on the single-player mode.
Free DLC!

The cooperative mode will also be getting a full year's worth of DLC, but it'll be free. Deep Silver doesn't want to split the game's online base up, and is making the right move by making new online missions free.
Goliath Edition

Diehard fans can even pick up the game's Goliath Edition, which is $159.99. This includes the game, its Expansion Pass, an art book, and a radio-controlled replica of the game's Goliath drone.
TimeSplitters 2 Levels

One of the neat bonuses in Homefront: The Revolution is that the game will feature an arcade cabinet that includes a playable version of TimeSplitters 2. Players will be able to play two levels, Siberia and Chicago, from the 2002 release. This means at least gamers will be getting one great first-person shooter when they pick up Homefront.
Opening Cinematic

To get a better feeling for the game's 30 hour campaign, check out the game's opening cinematic. It focuses on the evil APEX corporation, and shows what the player will be up against.
First 60 Minutes

Eurogamer has also released footage of the game's first hour. This is footage of the PC version, but should let gamers know if they want to drop $59.99 on the reboot.
Heavy Competition

Homefront: The Revolution was originally set to release in 2015, but now it's part of a busy May 2016. It's going up against other huge titles such as Battleborn, Uncharted 4, DOOM, and Overwatch.
Resistance Network App

Since every high profile release needs a companion app, Deep Silver has released the Resistance Network app for iOS and Android. It'll allow players to get news about the game straight to their phones, and unlock the Mobile Operator skill.
Day One Update

There'll be a day one update to download before playing. Deep Silver says the patch will “address additional last fixes and performance improvements across all platforms.” The base game is 28-32GB large, depending on your region.
