During yesterday’s GameStop Investor Day presentation, COO Tony Bartel addressed rumors surrounding new consoles, mentioning that they seem imminent:
Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent.
Nintendo’s NX seems likely to release this year, while the rumored PS4.5/PS4K is reportedly going to be unveiled before the launch of PlayStation VR in October.
When an analyst asked GameStop executives to clarify the “new console” statement, they said they wouldn’t be commenting further. Later on though, they added, “As usual, we know more than we can share.”
It’s worth noting that GameStop CEO Paul Raines correctly predicted PlayStation VR’s fall 2016 release before the official announcement.
As for the potential multi-billion dollar virtual reality market, Bartel revealed they have “very big” expectations for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. To help with VR awareness, GameStop stores will be hosting PlayStation VR demos beginning in June, with over 500,000 in-store demos expected by the end of December.
Sony’s John Koller said:
Trial drives the conversion to purchase. You have to be able to go into a GameStop to try this. We’ll have a fantastic technology, but you need to get your hands on it.
Bartel added, “We’re clearly going to be the key launch partner. We’ll be selling Sony PlayStation VR hardware, bundles, and games in stores.”
