Here’s How to Get PS4 Remote Play Working on Your PC or Mac

With PlayStation 4 firmware update 3.50 available to download, you can now use PS4 Remote Play to play games on your PC or Mac.

To help you get set up, Sony posted detailed instructions over on their PS4 Remote Play website, saying your PC must have either Window 8.1 or Windows 10 (32-bit or 64-bit), and your Mac must have either OS X Yosemite or OS X El Capitan.

Furthermore, your PC/Mac must have 2GB or more of RAM and a USB port, while PC owners also must have an Intel Core i5-560M Processor 2.67 GHz or faster, 100MB or more of space, a sound card, and 1024 x 768 or higher display resolution. For Mac owners, you also need an Intel Core i5-520M Processor 2.40 GHz or faster and 40MB of free space.

For the initial setup, download the PC file or Mac file on your computer and run it, then you’ll need to follow these steps on your PS4:

  • Enable Remote Play. Select (Settings) > [Remote Play Connection Settings], and then select the checkbox for [Enable Remote Play].
  • Activate the system as your primary PS4 system. Select (Settings) > [PlayStation Network/Account Management] > [Activate as Your Primary PS4] > [Activate].
  • To start Remote Play while your PS4 system is in rest mode, select (Settings) > [Power Save Settings] > [Set Features Available in Rest Mode]. Then select the checkboxes for [Stay Connected to the Internet] and [Enable Turning On PS4 from Network].

To use Remote Play, turn on your PS4 or put it into Rest Mode, connect a DualShock 4 to your computer with a USB cable, launch PS4 Remote Play on your computer and click Start, and then sign into the PlayStation Network account you use with your PS4. You’ll need to connect your computer and PS4 over the same network.

For the best results, Sony recommends a connection of at least 12 Mbps, but a connection of at least 5 Mbps should work. Additionally, they recommend using a wired internet connection for both your PS4 and PC/Mac.

To help improve PS4 Remote Play with a slow connection, follow these steps to adjust resolution and frame-rate:

Windows

Select [Settings] > [Video Quality for Remote Play] on the (PS4 Remote Play) start screen. Configure these settings:

  • For [Resolution], choose either [Standard (540p)] or [Low (360p)].
  • For [Frame Rate], choose [Standard].

Mac

Launch (PS4 Remote Play). Then choose [PS4 Remote Play] > [Preferences] > [Video Quality for Remote Play] from the menu bar. Configure these settings:

  • For [Resolution], choose either [Standard (540p)] or [Low (360p)].
  • For [Frame Rate], choose [Standard].

The default resolution is 540p, though it can be bumped up to 720p. Also, while the default frame-rate is 30fps, it can be increased to 60fps.
