Michel Ancel’s elusive Beyond Good and Evil 2 has reared its head once again and sure enough, the developer has reaffirmed that the sequel is still happening.
Appearing on Double Fine’s latest ‘Dev’s Play’ episode, Ancel spoke candidly about the long-in-development title with Tim Schafer and Greg Rice, noting how expectations have only continued to spike since the original Beyond Good and Evil launched in 2003.
“That’s the problem, [we have] no choice. [Beyond Good & Evil 2] has to be great. When we started [Beyond Good and Evil] there was not that much pressure. People are – the crazy thing is that [Beyond Good & Evil] was really not that successful and nobody talked about the game…and now, year after year, more and more people are talking about [Beyond Good and Evil 2].”
Addressing the cult status of the Ubisoft action-adventure series, Ancel believes that the first game still stands the test of time more than a decade on.
“I think it’s that the time and the energy we spent on Beyond Good and Evil is still there. There’s still something about it. When I look at it I see all the work, the AI trying to follow you, the cinematics, the mix of sound, music and colours. It’s all still there.”
Ubisoft never officially announced Beyond Good and Evil 2, and rumors surrounding the dormant sequel have only intensified since the teaser was first showcased back in 2008.
Michel Ancel, meanwhile, has taken point for his own independent studio Wild Sheep, and is currently overseeing the journey of its debut title, WiLD.
