In light of purported sales figures painting the sequel as a flop, Crystal Dynamics Game Director Brian Horton has reaffirmed that both Microsoft and publisher Square Enix are “very happy” with the performance of Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Addressing fan concerns via the unofficial TombRaiderForums, Horton noted that while he’s not in a position to divulge exact sales numbers, those companies that invested in Crystal’s sophomore outing were overly pleased with the game’s critical reception.
“I didn’t mean to go off topic or patronise, but there was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team. Square/Microsoft are happy with Crystal and Eidos Montreal and the game itself. As to the topic of sales, I’m unqualified to discuss it so I won’t have anything else to say on this thread.”
Releasing as a timed-exclusive across Xbox One and Xbox 360 a fortnight ago, Rise of the Tomb Raider entered the UK all-formats chart in fourth place, with unofficial sales figures claiming it fared considerably worse than fellow new entry Fallout 4 across the same period.
However, in light of these claims, Horton stood by the sequel.
“Microsoft and Square are very happy with Rise and the dev team, thanks for the concerns. Crystal and Eidos Montreal made a game we are proud of and we appreciate the overwhelming number of positive reviews and fan feedback.”
In related news, The Game Awards 2015 will herald news of the first DLC for Rise of the Tomb Raider later this week.
