DriveClub VR Revealed at Paris Games Week, “Could Turn Into Something More Than Just a Tech Demo”

In a behind closed doors presentation at Paris Games Week, Evolution Studios showed off a PlayStation VR version of DriveClub to Eurogamer.

Just a prototype that’s been worked on for three months, DriveClub VR runs at 60 frames-per-second and sees a BAC Mono running a circuit race around one of the India tracks from the base game.

As Game Director Paul Rustchynsky explained, Evolution optimized the VR version to get to 60fps – DriveClub on its own is 30fps – while having to reduce the car count from 12 to eight to support virtual reality. Additionally, trackside detail and weather were scaled back, with rear-view mirrors disabled, but Evolution hopes to re-enable them in the future.

Following the news, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said:

Looking at the future of DriveClub, Rustchynsky says they have “plans for the next six months,” including more content, more updates, and more features. As for DriveClub VR, he said:

At the moment it’s just a prototype. We don’t know what we’re going to do with that just yet. If it gets good reception here – which I think it will – I think that could turn into something more than just a tech demo.

In other DriveClub news, DriveClub Bikes is now available to download from the PlayStation Store.
