Lara Croft is “Mentally Prepared to Fight Fire With Fire” in Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider‘s writer, Rhianna Pratchett, has explained why Lara seems more aggressive in the upcoming title as compared to 2013’s reboot. In an interview with GameSpot, Pratchett said that Lara is a “survivor” who is “mentally prepared to fight fire with fire” after witnessing all kinds of violence.

She is a survivor. It’s more of an emotional trap than a physical one. She’s seen the game’s antagonists do terrible things to those that get in their way, and she’s now more mentally prepared to fight fire with fire.

And although she’s not 100 percent comfortable with this, she’s starting to come to the conclusion that for whatever reason, she’s someone that can do this.

Pratchett went on to say that the game’s narrative isn’t just told through dialogue or cinematics, but also through animations and environmental interaction.

You have to learn how to use the whole of the game, including animation, mechanics, music, to support video game narratives. In a perfect scenario all the different development disciplines should have an investment in the story.

Pratchett compared video games to other entertainment media, stating that writing for games is quite challenging because they have to be designed around player interaction. Audiences play more of a passive role in other forms of entertainment whereas in video games, they are actively involved.

In other entertainment media the audience largely has a passive role. In games they are active, they are part of the story; they are the story. You are constantly having to factor the player into the narrative equations and find ways to emotionally align them to the player character. There are an awful lot of plates being spun.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available for the PS4 in holiday 2016. The game will come with a season pass, three extra game modes, and micro-transactions.
